<title>The Most Expensive Word in Tech: “Just”</title>
    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/7148/The-Most-Expensive-Word-in-Tech-Just.aspx</link>
<description>In tech teams, the word &amp;ldquo;just&amp;rdquo; (&amp;ldquo;just add a field,&amp;rdquo; &amp;ldquo;just change a label,&amp;rdquo; &amp;ldquo;just add an exception&amp;rdquo;) is a warning sign&amp;mdash;not because people are wrong to ask, but because they&amp;rsquo;re only seeing the visible slice of the work. This article introduces the &amp;ldquo;Just Tax&amp;rdquo; framework to make hidden costs visible: Data, Decision, Dependency, Documentation, Deployment, and Diplomacy taxes. Through three quick BA-centric mini-scenarios, it shows how &amp;ldquo;small&amp;rdquo; changes become requirements debt when definitions, approvals, downstream systems, testing, and stakeholder expectations aren&amp;rsquo;t accounted for. It closes with practical, copy-paste lines BAs can use to keep momentum while turning &amp;ldquo;just&amp;rdquo; into a clear tradeoff.

<description>An inflection point. A forcing function. A once-per-civilization opportunity to prove that human judgment, contextual understanding, and adaptive intelligence remain indispensable even as artificial intelligence transforms everything around us.

You&amp;#39;re not preparing for 2027.

You&amp;#39;re defining it.

Act accordingly.

    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/7109/Data-Privacy-The-BAs-Secret-Weapon-for-Winning-Customer-Trust.aspx</link>
<description>For business analysts, those unsung heroes who sift through mountains of information to guide corporate decisions, data privacy emerges as an unexpected ally. It&amp;#39;s the secret weapon that not only protects against breaches and fines but also actively forges unbreakable bonds of trust with customers. This isn&amp;#39;t about fearmongering over scandals or reciting dry compliance rules; it&amp;#39;s about reimagining privacy as the foundation of enduring loyalty in a sceptical marketplace.

<description>Thinking outside the box. Making a paradigm shift. Looking at the problem in a brand-new way. Taking a fresh approach. These expressions all refer to changing how we look at a difficult problem to solve it in a more effective manner.

People naturally get stuck in their established ways of thinking. It&amp;rsquo;s all we know at any given time. But sometimes that&amp;#39;s not sufficient. Instead of continuing to pursue the current strategy that doesn&amp;rsquo;t work, we must shake up our thinking, sometimes radically.

<description>I measure the success of my 50+ year career in IT by the positive feedback I&amp;rsquo;ve received from colleagues, stakeholders, students, and readers. I started as a Cobol programmer, progressed to software analyst/designer, and for the last 30 years have performed the role of business analyst. Interspersed in those years I&amp;rsquo;ve shared what I&amp;rsquo;d learned through writing, teaching, presenting, and mentoring. This article discusses the top seven &amp;ldquo;Takeaway Points&amp;rdquo; from the over-30 BA resources I&amp;rsquo;ve produced related to requirements for information systems.

<description>How do you ask the right question?&amp;nbsp; Would it surprise you to know that perhaps the best way of asking the right question is to keep your mouth shut and not ask anything at all?

That previous statement might require some explanation. &amp;nbsp; What I&amp;#39;m talking about here is the pause.&amp;nbsp; It is the space between your response to someone&amp;#39;s question, response&amp;nbsp; or comment and the space before the next question you are asking or comment you are making.

    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/6659/Fostering-Continuous-Learning-and-Growth-Through-Reflective-Practices-in-Software-Teams.aspx</link>
<description>In this series&amp;rsquo; first article, Beyond Tools and Processes: Strategies for Successful Software Development Teams, we introduced the concept of reflective practices. Reflection aims to facilitate learning from experience. The essence of reflection is to actively engage in a process to gain perspective on one&amp;rsquo;s own actions and experiences. The aim of this process is to analyze those experiences rather than merely living through them. By cultivating curiosity and a willingness to explore our actions and experiences, we unlock the potential for intentional learning, not only as individuals but also as a team or even an organization. This learning stems not from books or experts but directly from our own work and lived experiences, successes, and failures.

<description>Fear is a powerful motivator. It often drives us to hold onto the familiar, resisting change, even when the change might bring progress. This fear&amp;mdash;of the unknown, of disruption&amp;mdash;feeds into status quo bias, a cognitive bias that compels individuals and organizations to stick with established systems, even when these systems are no longer effective. As business analysts, overcoming this bias is critical to fostering innovation and success in projects.

<description>Psychological safety has been reported to result in increased knowledge sharing among software development team members. Studies found a positive correlation between social interaction, team psychological safety, and synergistic knowledge development. When team members feel safe and confident that the environment is free of blame and consequences, they are more inclined to share information. Synergistic knowledge development is observed when a group amalgamates the diverse perspectives of its individual members, thereby leveraging the collective knowledge of the group.

    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/6587/Psychological-Safety-as-a-Strategy-for-Successful-Software-Development-Teams.aspx</link>
<description>Psychological safety (PS) is the shared belief among team members that it is safe to take interpersonal risks in the workplace.&amp;nbsp;PS is relevant to software development (SD) teams, particularly those using agile practices. Some practitioners even claim that &amp;ldquo;agile doesn&amp;rsquo;t work without psychological safety&amp;rdquo;.&amp;nbsp;Effective collaboration, creativity, and collective problem solving are fundamental in everyday SD teams. PS fosters an atmosphere where team members feel free to share their views and opinions without fear of judgment or retaliation, thereby facilitating an environment conducive to effective collaboration. In a psychologically safe workplace, individuals are comfortable sharing their opinions, worries, or doubts, seeking support when required, and acknowledging errors without fear of being blamed or punished. In such an environment, teams and their members feel empowered to take ownership, innovate, take initiatives, and assume responsibility for their deliverables, resulting in better outcomes. The question, then, is how to achieve and sustain a psychologically safe workplace in the context of software development.

<description>Regardless of the definition, decades of research show that team dynamics and qualities can sway project outcomes. Whether success is about productivity, efficiency, quality, or scope attainment, at the end of the day, it&amp;rsquo;s the team that would invest the effort to meet these expectations. Research on teamwork reveals that successful teams are psychologically safe, foster shared accountability for the outcomes of their endeavor, exercise reflective practices to facilitate continuous learning and improvement, and embrace diversity and inclusion, among other things. In this article series, we will learn how these team qualities foster a high performance environment and why they are relevant in the context of software development.

Instinctively, you feel more at ease, more inclined to browse, and perhaps even to buy something. This subtle influence on your behavior is no accident&amp;mdash;it is an example of priming at work. Now, picture leveraging this same psychological phenomenon to enhance the effectiveness of business analysis. Welcome to the world of priming, where a well-placed word or image can shape perceptions, drive engagement, and ultimately lead to more successful projects.

<description>In a world where most organizations tend to live &amp;ldquo;quarter to quarter&amp;rdquo;, it may be hard for a BA to depart from established reactive approaches to problem-solving. But for those who fight this short-term imperative and use pattern recognition to their advantage, the prize can be huge. Before long, you may realize that your primary contribution is no longer the delivery of standalone analysis outputs, but rather the kind of learning and transformational change that creates a large and lasting impact on business results.

<title>Decision-making compass: a powerful lever for business analysts</title>
    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/6468/Decision-making-compass-a-powerful-lever-for-business-analysts.aspx</link>
<description>In complex environments, cognitive load (relating to tax complexity and multiple inputs that affect decision-making) can significantly hamper the quality and efficiency of project choices. High-performance business analysts can play an integral and important role to avoid this issue by advocating for the adoption of a decision-making compass to deliver insight to stakeholders about how well their objectives may be satisfied by potential alternative courses of action.&amp;nbsp; The next time you&amp;rsquo;re embarking on a high-stakes project, make sure you have a decision-making compass ready to use, even if only informally defined. While there is no guarantee that applying it to project choices will completely eliminate the risk of mistakes, it will no doubt help move things in the right direction and maximize performance.

    <title>Yesterday I Stubbed My Toe… and Became a Better Business Analyst</title>
    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/6467/Yesterday-I-Stubbed-My-Toe-and-Became-a-Better-Business-Analyst.aspx</link>
<description>Yesterday my day started like any other day&amp;hellip;&amp;nbsp; I woke up, got ready, and went about my usual tasks. Little did I know that a seemingly trivial incident would offer me profound insights applicable to my role as a business analyst.

As I hurriedly moved through my home, preoccupied with thoughts for the day ahead, I carelessly stubbed my toe on the leg of the dining room table (my wife had moved it to try a new layout). The sharp pain that shot through my foot brought everything to a sudden halt. In that moment, or maybe a bit later, of discomfort, I realized there were valuable lessons to be gleaned from this seemingly mundane mishap.

Firstly, the importance of mindfulness became abundantly clear. In my haste, I had failed to pay attention to my surroundings. Similarly, as a business analyst, it&amp;#39;s crucial to remain mindful and attentive to details in every aspect of my work and ongoing projects. Whether it&amp;#39;s analyzing requirements, identifying stakeholders&amp;#39; needs, or documenting processes, being fully present and aware allows me to gather accurate information and make good decisions.

Furthermore, the incident underscored the significance of resilience. Despite the initial pain, I quickly recovered and continued with my day. This resilience mirrors the mindset needed in the face of common challenges faced as a business analyst. Projects may encounter setbacks, requirements may change unexpectedly, and stakeholders may present conflicting priorities. However, maintaining resilience and adaptability enables me to navigate through obstacles and find innovative solutions to anything that pops-up.

Moreover, the experience served as a reminder of the importance of communication. As I nursed my injured toe, I couldn&amp;#39;t help but think about how effective communication could have prevented the mishap (if only my wife had told me about her remodeling plans). Similarly, clear and open communication is essential in my role as a business analyst. Facilitating productive discussions, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and ensuring alignment between business objectives and technical solutions all rely on effective communication among the various stakeholders.

In conclusion, what initially seemed like a minor inconvenience turned out to be a valuable learning experience. As I limped away from the scene of my mishap, I carried with me lessons in mindfulness, resilience, and communication - all of which I can apply to enhance my effectiveness as a business analyst. In every stumble, there lie opportunities for growth and lessons for the future.

<description>Manufacturing outburst in combination with automation makes us think sometimes that economy is changed too fast and we left behind. The recent COVID-19 pandemic crisis can be perceived as creative destruction emerged new models that can work. Cases of thriving during the time of chaos, where familiar ways of working stopped working, indicated that many regular people can thrive when a sense of purpose combined with financial perspective are present. Looking back into the experiences from lockdowns existential questions were risen and depicted through more quality measures than quantitative ones.

<description>Okay, you believe you had a great day at work today; that you accomplished a lot. Maybe you did. Then again, maybe you didn&amp;#39;t do as much as you might think. A lot of people believe just because they are a model of efficiency, they are being highly productive. This is simply not true. We have discussed the concept of productivity on more than one occasion in this column, but some trends in the business world have caused me to revisit it again.

    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/6254/Requirements-for-Implementing-Packaged-Solutions.aspx</link>
<description>Many organizations acquire and adapt purchased packaged solutions (also called commercial off-the-shelf, or COTS, products) to meet their software needs, instead of building new systems from scratch. Software as a service (SaaS), or cloud, solutions are becoming increasingly available to meet software needs as well. Whether you&amp;rsquo;re using a package as part or all of the solution for a new project or implementing a solution in the cloud, you still need requirements. Requirements let you evaluate solution candidates so that you can select the most appropriate package, and then they let you adapt the package to meet your needs. This article describes several ways to approach requirements definition when you plan to acquire a commercial package to meet your needs.

<title>Creativity in Business Analysis: What Is Its Importance?</title>
    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/6199/Creativity-in-Business-Analysis-What-Is-Its-Importance.aspx</link>
<description>Data is crucial in making sound business decisions, and business owners can acquire this much-needed data through business analysis.

For example, Microsoft&amp;rsquo;s data analytics to help move 1,200 employees from five buildings to four resulted in a 46% reduction in meeting travel, saving the company an estimated $520,000 annually in employee time.

Such a solution is possible through creative means, especially when analysts look into evolving and nontraditional trends like remote working, collaboration, and employee distance.

Business analysts interested in improving their methods to evaluate enterprises can access numerous tools that can assist in creative business analysis, such as Google Ads and Google Display provided by digital advertising companies.

Source:&amp;nbsp;StartupStockPhotos from Pixabay

Why is creativity important for business analysts? What is the PESTLE method, and why is it beneficial to analysts for idea generation? Is this method helpful in business analysis? Does this method have any limitations?

This article tackles the importance of creativity when analysts evaluate business challenges and develop solutions. This write-up also explores the PESTLE method&amp;#39;s advantages and disadvantages when used in business analysis.

The Value of Using Creativity in Business Analysis

The business world is often full of data-driven and tough-minded logical analysis, that it&amp;rsquo;s easy for some analysts to leave out creativity.

Some say businesses don&amp;rsquo;t have time for creative pursuits and are only interested in results. Perhaps this situation happens in some cases.

Others might even argue that creativity is too unstructured and without discipline, which may go against how traditional businesses operate.

But creativity can help business analysts form fresh ideas and innovative solutions for unique problems and ever-changing requirements. Today&amp;rsquo;s business environment is constantly evolving and adapting. Analysts must be creative to think of new solutions to address these changes.

In other words, creativity can be an analysis, problem-solving, transformation, and strategy tool you can use together with other business analysis methods.

By combining creativity with logic, structures, and processes, business analysts can improve their evaluation of the enterprise and provide eye-opening solutions that are fresh in the eyes of the business.

Using the PESTLE Method in Creating Ideas and Solving Problems

The PESTLE analysis is a classic method business analysts use to get a picture of an enterprise&amp;rsquo;s macroenvironment. The acronym stands for:

 Political
 Economic
 Social
 Technological
 Legal
 Environmental

PESTLE allows companies to understand the environmental factors impacting a new business or industry. Some factors will be more critical to various business types, and a PESTLE analysis can help identify risk factors for these firms.

You might ask, &amp;ldquo; If this method is already an established business analysis tool, how do we use it creatively?&amp;rdquo; In this case, you can consider combining it with other tools that encourage creativity, such as the six thinking hats method.

The six thinking hats is a business analysis tool for idea generation and problem-solving. This method requires each participant to think and perform according to what &amp;ldquo;hat&amp;rdquo; they&amp;rsquo;re wearing and explore issues creatively and objectively using predefined perspectives.

In the six thinking hats, each colored hat has the following roles:

White hat: Provides logic and objectivity and is concerned with facts and figures.

Green hat: Engages in creativity and seeks new ideas.

Yellow hat: Promotes positivity and provides an optimistic outlook.

Red hat: Gives ideas based on emotion and intuition.

Black hat: Provides cautious and critical judgments.

Blue hat: Controls the process of the other hats.

One feature of the six thinking hats method is its flexibility. If you have a team of analysts, you can assign one or more roles to each person or prefer not to use all hats.

This way, each person &amp;ldquo;wearing a hat&amp;rdquo; can focus on a particular role and present ideas specific to that role.

In other words, how you use this tool depends on your resources and the business problem you must solve.

You can also include a seventh hat, also called the royal hat, representing the business owner or overall decision maker. The person with this hat often has the final say on what business decisions or solutions the organization should implement.

Political Factor

This PESTLE factor refers to government controls over the industry or economy of a country or state. The political environment can influence an industry through the following factors:

 Legislation relevant to the industry

 Taxation

Trade tariffs (merchandise imports or customs duties)

 Economic or fiscal policies

Internal or external conflicts, such as wars, rebellions, or terrorism

Using the six thinking hats method, you can use the yellow hat to present business opportunities relevant to the political environment. Examples are decreasing tax rates or increased security in the country.

With the white hat, you can present the country&amp;rsquo;s laws so the business can understand the relevant labor laws, foreign investments, and customs policies.

Economic Factor

This factor directly impacts a company&amp;rsquo;s long-term prospects in a market, including how a company sets its product prices or influences the market supply and demand. Economic factors include:

 Inflation rate

 Unemployment rate

 Interest rates

 Foreign exchange rates

 Economic growth patterns

Using the red hat to introduce a creative spin to this factor, you can say that specific social sentiments in the market are likely to affect household purchasing patterns.

For example, if there&amp;rsquo;s a significant occurrence of customers purchasing bath soap with toothbrushes, should the business consider packaging both products together?

Social Factor

This factor involves culture and demographics that can impact the firm&amp;rsquo;s market environment and influence spending habits, lifestyle choices, and peak purchasing periods.

A society&amp;rsquo;s lifestyle and culture can influence when, where, and how people engage with and purchase products and services. Social factors include:

 Consumer buying patterns

 Demographics

 Health

 Religion and ethics

 Opinions and attitudes

 Media

 Education

 Brand preferences

Using the white hat for analyzing social factors, you can consider using historical data for peak buying periods.

One example is when classes start, so you&amp;rsquo;ll know when the business should replenish its inventories for educational materials like notebooks, textbooks, and writing materials to sell.

Technological Factor

This PESTLE factor can affect specific industries more than others. For example, financial companies can invest more in technological security solutions than coffee shops.

Some of these technological factors are:

 Automation

 Communication

 Information technology

 Patents

 Licensing

 Research and development

 Technological awareness and development

Suppose you&amp;rsquo;re analyzing a business using a black hat. You can view the business environment critically and consider the risks of implementing technological solutions.

If the business needs a database solution, you can present risk factors like cybercrime, theft, employee errors, fire damage, or natural disasters. These things can put the hardware and software at risk.

Legal Factor

The legal factor often works closely with the political environment. This relationship can affect the company&amp;rsquo;s internal and external environment by influencing industry-wide procedures and policies and controlling employment and safety regulations.

Legal factors include:

 Employment laws

 Industry-specific regulations

 Regulatory authorities

 Consumer protection

 Environmental regulations

Suppose you&amp;rsquo;re analyzing a business in a foreign country, and someone on your analysis team wearing the black hat suggests the country has unfavorable employment laws. If you wear the green hat, you&amp;rsquo;re encouraged to think of a new solution to make such a law work in the firm&amp;rsquo;s favor.

Environmental Factor

This factor relates to the physical environment of a business, including environmental protection requirements.

While the environment is more important to industries like tourism, agriculture, and food production, this factor can also affect other firms that do business with these industries. Elements under this factor include:

 Geographical location

 Weather

 Climate and global climate change

Environmental offsets (compensation for unavoidable environmental impacts)

A yellow hat analysis of the environmental factor can involve proposing environment- or community-focused programs to the company and discussing these programs&amp;rsquo; advantages like branding benefits or broader market reach.

Advantages of the PESTLE Method

Many analysts have used the PESTLE method because of its effectiveness for the purpose for which it&amp;rsquo;s created. The advantages of this tool include cost-effectiveness and awareness development.

Cost-Effectiveness

In most cases, the only thing you need to spend to conduct a PESTLE analysis is time.

Additional programs and ideas can help provide input and feedback in a PESTLE analysis. But in general, you don&amp;rsquo;t need to make a formal document to perform this method; a pen and paper or a simple document can suffice.

A well-crafted PESTLE analysis should be straightforward and easily digestible. The time you spend, the amount of research you need, and how you combine PESTLE with other analysis tools can change. But the cost to perform such an analysis won&amp;rsquo;t fluctuate too much.

Awareness Development

Business analysts typically use PESTLE to analyze a firm&amp;rsquo;s macroenvironment. But with some tweaking, you can narrow the analysis to specific products, marketing programs, customer relationships, and other relevant business areas.

For instance, when you use PESTLE to analyze new developments within the business, this method can help raise awareness of potential threats.

Such threats can take the form of existing competitors, new entrants to the industry, or competition among the firm&amp;rsquo;s products.

Another example is when your data shows a 20% population growth in a particular city. At first glance, this increase can mean more potential customers for the business.

But what if the increase comprises predominantly young adults in the 20- to 30-year range while the enterprise&amp;rsquo;s target market is high-income individuals in their 50s? You can recommend that the business consider developing a new product targeting this developing market segment.

Limitations of the PESTLE Method

PESTLE is one of several business analysis tools that work for various situations. But none of them is a perfect solution for all business analysis needs. Like the other tools, PESTLE has limitations, including fast-changing factors and being time-consuming.

Fast-Changing Factors

PESTLE factors change all the time. For example, a law that favors a business can suddenly be repealed the next day. A state-of-the-art technology lauded as revolutionary a few months ago may already be outpaced by a newer and better one.

So if you&amp;rsquo;re doing a PESTLE analysis, the data you have now may already be outdated. Changes in any of the six factors can affect your analysis results.

Such uncertainties can make it difficult for the analyst to predict the business&amp;rsquo; future, which is what the PESTLE analysis is meant to do.

Time-Consuming Process

While PESTLE is cost-effective, it&amp;rsquo;s also time-consuming, especially when you consider that you have six factors to work on.

In addition, you don&amp;rsquo;t want to present shallow information to the decision-maker, so you have to provide thorough research to some extent, which takes a lot of time.

For example, if you&amp;rsquo;re researching the legal aspect of a business, you can&amp;rsquo;t only look at the first paragraph of a particular law. There may be more pertinent details in that law that the first paragraph doesn&amp;rsquo;t cover, and reading through the whole thing can be time-consuming.

So if you&amp;rsquo;re planning to evaluate a firm&amp;rsquo;s macroenvironment as part of your business analysis, consider using the PESTLE method and provide creative solutions by using this tool in tandem with the six thinking hats method.

<title>The Adaptability framework for Business Analyst</title>
    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/5601/The-Adaptability-framework-for-Business-Analyst.aspx</link>
<description>As a Business Analyst we might need to work on Projects related to multiple industries and domains during our career. It is critical that we try to leverage our past knowledge and experience to learn and adapt to new industries or domains as we progress in our career. At the same time, it is equally important to unlearn things which might hinder the Project&amp;rsquo;s progress. I have worked on Retail, Consumer Packaged Goods, Utilities and Healthcare industries spanning across domains like Sales, Marketing, Finance and Operations. I have found the below framework often helpful to deliver maximum value to the Project I am working on.

&amp;nbsp;

Leverage: There are quite a few skills which are needed by a BA irrespective of the Industry or domain he/she is working on, like, communication, documentation, elicitation techniques, analytical frameworks, and usage of tools like JIRA. There also business processes which remain same across the industries with few variations, for example, the lead generation process and conversion to Opportunities, Customer complaint handling by Customer Service team. In such scenarios, the BA can leverage the knowledge gained from previous experience and build on it to quickly progress on the current project.

Learn: As a Business Analyst it is critical to have an open mind to learn new aspects of business, particularly, if there is a shift in Project from industry to another or one domain to another. For example, the Customer billing process in Consumer Packaged goods could be straight forward where invoices get issued based on the Products delivered, whereas, the billing process in Healthcare, that too in Medical Devices Industry could be complicated owing to the fact that Medical devices could be both rented and sold to both institutions and Patients and with or without Insurance. Also, the methodologies of Project delivery differ across the Projects and a BA needs to be able to learn and adapt to the methodologies.

Unlearn: Unlearning different concepts is equally important for efficient performance as is learning of new concepts. Carrying the weight of previously learnt concepts and trying to force fit them to a different domain or industry would often result in inefficiencies at work. For example, having the experience of implementing an order management solution for Product sale based business might not be applicable for implementing an order management solution for a subscription-based business. The Product life cycle and renewal mechanisms differ significantly for both the business models. Trying to force fit the knowledge of previous experience would result in frustration from both business and development teams. Hence, it is important to unlearn irrelevant knowledge from previous experience to demonstrate maximum efficiency in a Project.

Hence, in order to be relevant in the current dynamic work environment, it is important for a Business Analyst to be adaptable, as Alvin Toffler has rightly said, &amp;ldquo;The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot&amp;nbsp;learn,&amp;nbsp;unlearn, and relearn.&amp;rdquo;&amp;nbsp;

<description>Being &amp;ldquo;data-driven&amp;rdquo; doesn&amp;rsquo;t help create project success; being evidence-based does.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;Evidence-based problem solving reduces the risk of blind spots and confirmation bias and increases the chances of achieving the desired outcomes. In high-stakes projects, risks can be dramatically reduced when a business analyst is willing to apply first principles thinking, hypothesis testing, and information value analysis to integrate the best evidence into the decision-making process.

<description>Business Analysts solve problems, but ultimately these solutions are meant to serve people, and it takes people to create the definition for these solutions. With that said, no matter how great an analyst is at discovery, analysis and solutioning, key soft skills are essential to being a best-in-class business analyst.

Soft skills are the people-side of business and really any type of engagement. There is a large variety of skills included in the soft skills category depending on which resource you read. But there are two that always seem to land in the top five..&amp;nbsp;

<description>The BABOK talks of the underlying competencies for a Business Analyst at length. At the core of all those competencies is the ability to build relationships. In other words, it is the foundation. The aptitudes are not noticed unless you have a relationship with the stakeholders. Demonstrating these capabilities helps enhance your relationships even further. So, I will even say relationship building is a prefix and a suffix to competencies. Everything revolves around your ability to build relationships.

    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/5932/Knowledge-Is-Not-Zero-Sum.aspx</link>
<description>Knowledge isn&amp;rsquo;t like other commodities. If I have three dollars and give you one of them, now I have only two dollars. Money is zero-sum in the sense that I must lose some of it for you to gain something in this transaction. In contrast, if I give you some of my knowledge, I still possess all the knowledge myself. I can share it with other people, as can you. Everyone touched by this expanding circle of knowledge benefits.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;Everyone has something to teach&amp;mdash;and to learn. You don&amp;rsquo;t need to be the world&amp;rsquo;s expert on some topic to be helpful. You just need some useful block of knowledge and the willingness to share it. In the world of technology, if you&amp;rsquo;re one week ahead of the next person in some area, you&amp;rsquo;re a wizard. Someone else will doubtless be ahead of you in other areas, so take advantage of their trailblazing. People in a healthy learning culture share what they know and also acknowledge that someone else might know a better way.

<description>A crisis always highlights the need for specific managerial and leadership Behaviors (Behavioral School of Leadership). These behaviors of course are triggered by specific personal characteristics of the leader (Leadership Trait Paradigm), by the specific conditions (Leadership Contingency Theory) and by the willingness and devote of individual in continues practicing these behaviors any possible occasion. Although it is my intention to approach the leadership from a behavioral point of view, a synthesizing and integrating logic is more than necessary to have a holistic view that can lead to insightful conclusions.

<description>The concept of resilience is closely connected with the concept of self-leadership as exercising and improving yourself towards being able to lead yourself can help you being able to return.&amp;nbsp; In the face of a crisis some people ride out uncertainty instead of being overpowered by it. Are there special personal characteristics of these persons? Are they gifted from their birth having supreme quality of genes? Maybe but what they do is exercising certain behaviors. Behaviors that not only triggered by their personal characteristics and their personality but from their willingness and commitment in those behaviors

<description>Is your requirements approach friendly to vocabulary, policies and messages? I mean directly. Wouldn&amp;rsquo;t it be of great help to your organization in achieving its goals if they were? In our experience, policy sources almost always need interpretation and disambiguation to achieve an effective practicable form. As this column discusses, the rule message &amp;lsquo;Reserved for Green Car&amp;rsquo; provides an excellent case in point.

<description>As a business analyst you will have to communicate internally and externally. Many channels and type of communication may be used. Except ensuring that all the parts have understood correctly the message as you have it in your mind, you need also to perceive what you are saying as important, correct and insightful. You need your communication effort to have impact and many times to trigger specific actions.

    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/5835/Changing-the-Culture-of-a-Business-Analyst-Team.aspx</link>
<description>Culture determines how people behave. If you want to change behaviour, you have to look to changing the culture. This is the story of how we changed the culture of a team of business analysts.

We inherited this team; they worked in an organisation where the culture was pretty poor. People were uninterested in their work. They resented the time they spent at work; they cheated on timecards; they simply did not do any work whenever they thought they could get away with it. Naturally enough, performance and productivity were abysmal.

<title>With Business Analysis, Soft Skills are the New Hard Skills</title>
    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/5836/With-Business-Analysis-Soft-Skills-are-the-New-Hard-Skills.aspx</link>
<description>In all my years as a Consultant Business Analyst, having reached a level of proficiency, I have realised that being a business analyst is seldom about the hard skills. In fact, it is more about the soft skills and BAs who operate at that level are more impressive and effective in their job. Hard skills like documentation, requirements elicitation, process maps etc. are easily taught and acquired but the soft skills are developed with experience and the right attitude towards this role. Over time I feel the perception of the value of BAs has diluted and I blame those who have been superficial about performing this role. Those who think their role is just about the tangible artefacts like the business requirements document, process maps, business case, etc. Those who think they are here to deliver a project and nothing else. Those who think the BA&amp;rsquo;s job is to take orders and execute. But the fact is that the role of a BA is a lot more subtle than one thinks. There is a much broader aspect to this role, which is often forgotten, and we get caught in deliverables and artefacts.

Let&amp;rsquo;s look at some aspects of this role, which are common knowledge and broaden our perspective of that. When the mindset of the Business Analyst changes to the bigger picture and to the more delicate facets to this role, you perform much better as a business analyst and are a more reliable and thus a desirable professional for companies.

    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/5789/Why-I-am-a-proud-Business-Analyst.aspx</link>
<description>Someone recently asked me &amp;ldquo; What does a typical day for a Business Analyst look like?&amp;rdquo; and my response was that if you do find someone who can articulately answer that question, they are probably a very good Business Analyst to start with. No two days look the same in this profession. A person in this role must have many facets to their personality in order for them to be a confident and a strong Business Analyst. I really like the business analysis profession because there are multiple dimensions to the various roles we may be asked to fulfil.

Being a Business Analyst has largely shaped my career and it has also played a big part in shaping my personality. What&amp;rsquo;s it about this role that has the potential to make a professional grow into a strong and a confident character? The purpose of this article is to talk about these aspects and show how a Business Analyst can use these aspects to their advantage to not only become the best Business Analyst that they can be but also to be a strong and confident personality that will help them at any turn of life; professional or personal.

<title>‘Attentive listening’ is a key skill we must all excel in the Agile age</title>

<description>Sometimes it&amp;rsquo;s the simple things that make a profound difference. Sometimes they can be so blindingly obvious that we cannot see them. And the biggest impediment to progress can be between our own ears.

In this article I will describe &amp;lsquo;attentive listening&amp;rsquo;.&amp;nbsp; We will cover how to do it, why it works and when to do it.&amp;nbsp; At all times we will bear in mind the Agile manifesto commitment to maximizing the amount of work not done &amp;ndash; not done by us, by the teams we work with and by the stakeholder!

Listening is a cornerstone skill of business analysis.&amp;nbsp; If an analyst is to be of any value then they must be alert to clues in the environment. What thoughts, frustrations and opportunities are there? Understanding what is said, is an absolutely fundamental part of any analysis in order to produce useful insight or alignment.

So, you listen already?&amp;nbsp;Sure you do, yet what are you listening to?&amp;nbsp; The whole of what the speaker has to say? Are you giving them a chance to finish their thoughts?

    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/5686/10-Tips-to-Improve-the-UX-Writing-Skills.aspx</link>
<description>In the simplest explanation of the term, a UX writer is an author who writes for user experience. When using a digital product, you follow text in order to obtain the user experience you&amp;rsquo;re after. This text should be precise, brief, and straight to the point. The writer&amp;rsquo;s goal is to guide the user through the different stages of product use.

The term gets mixed up with technical writing and copywriting. The difference is that UX writing is much more concise.&amp;nbsp; An effective copy results from the collaboration between the writer and the entire design team.

Let&amp;rsquo;s start with the specifics: how can you improve your UX writing skills and contribute towards an improved final product?

    <link>https://modernanalyst.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/115/ID/5623/Think-youre-a-Business-Analyst-BA-not-a-Salesperson-Think-again.aspx</link>
<description>When I began training to be a BA, I never dreamt that I would need to be a salesperson too, in fact, I&amp;#39;m glad I hadn&amp;#39;t realized that as it may have deterred me from, what is for me, the most suitable and fulfilling career that I could have wished for.
